Music Marketing Blog #2

We have used a variety of processes for our music marketing project throughout the duration of it.

In the beginning, we were given a file with plenty of song choices spanning various genres. We enjoyed and envisioned a much broader idea with the punk rock song, 9th at Pine by Less Than Jake. Therefore, we went along with it.

When researching for our project, we looked at several recording institutions that were popular among our genre of punk rock and other related sub-genres, like Interscope and Warner Music Group. We found through the four case studies we studied the many different distribution and marketing techniques used by these artists to develop their brand and appeal to consumers. We also found who exactly our target audience consisted of, that being older teenage to younger adult males.

After researching, we began brainstorming ideas on what exactly we were going to do with this project. To come up with our artist's name, we tried doing a random name generator, and what came up was "Freight Patrol", which we all agreed sounded right to what we were trying to do with the project. To fit the aesthetic of our song and our newly created artist, we based our presentation off of a template on Canva which we believed suited it best.

For our music video, Sabrina and Joey came up with the idea to shoot a rebellious-style video, as that is a large component of many punk rock songs. The music video was meant to depict the story of a teenage girl who instead of going to school ends up rebelling against her parents and hanging out with her friends around town and at the beach.

As for post production, the music video was edited by Sabrina, while me and the rest of the team worked on the presentation and its contents.

For our presentation, we chose to use the online platform Canva as it held the template that we were interested in as mentioned above. We split aside our ten slides into two for each of us and prepared lines + bullets to help us remember while presenting. I, for example, focused on the distribution and marketing of our group while Joey spoke about the different case studies we used that let us to our finished product. Before the presentation day, we studied our lines and specific slides and made it a point to reach more than a minute and 30 seconds for each person.

The project as a whole was a very fun and interesting experience for all of us.  I enjoyed the presence of my group members as they made it a point to do their work while keeping up the enjoyable atmosphere. I learned more about the distribution and marketing techniques used by a lot of these larger artists nowadays to better grasp their audience. Overall I feel like this project helped all of us out when thinking about our upcoming Cambridge Portfolio.
